I never write about fast food restaurants- I basically just don’t go to them anymore. Burgers and fried chicken don’t appeal to me. However, in the great city of New York there are vegetarian fast food places. Who could pass that up?
There are a few different vegetarian fast food chains in the city but we stopped at Crisp Vegetarian. They have 2 locations in Manhattan, 1 in Brooklyn and 2 in northern New Jersey.
The menu is great and the food really is produced in a fast manner- just as fast as those burger joints. The base of the menu centers around falafels, hummus and salad bowls. I looked over the selection of signature falafels and was impressed with the variety- from a Mexican version with chipotle sauce and spicy corn salsa to one called Africa with a habanero peanut sauce and sweet potatoes. There is of course, the traditional Authentic falafel with hummus, cucumber and mint. And any vegetarian knows that falafels are full of protein just like a meat burger.
I chose the Athenian – a Greek version with an herbed yogurt sauce, Greek salad, feta cheese and kalamata olives. It was all stuffed into a pita- and I mean stuffed. I loved it.
Part of the fun to was in the packaging. The container can be turned into a little box to turn the sandwich portable. Very convenient for a busy New Yorker or a tourist on the move.
Chad ordered the Crispy Falafel Burger- falafel patties on a toasted brioche bun and topped with your more traditional burger toppings- lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheese and a special house sauce.
Even better were the prices. While my sandwich was $8.95, Chad’s burger was $5.95, or add waffle fries or a garden salad for an additional $2.
I also had a Mint Lemonade- so much tastier and healthier than soda (but also probably full of sugar too so go easy.) So refreshing……
Crisp was not only very clean, there was not that greasy fries and burger smell of other fast food places, that smell that gets in your hair and clothes…none of that here.
If only the rest of the country would catch on…..or if only Crisp would expand to some of the other areas of the country I travel to. We in Orlando are about to get our own vegetarian fast food restaurant called Maoz Vegetarian- another chain found in New York City- a place we will certainly try but we were very happy with Crisp and would LOVE one down here- especially as Orlando is quickly becoming a town on vegetarians. We have a lot of options here for Veggie Heads in O-town but nothing like Crisp….. yet.
Convenience, a fresh and healthy menu…..4 1/2 out of 5 sprouts.
