One of the best things I love about New York City is the variety of culinary options available to Vegans, Vegetarians, Veggie Heads and others with special dietary needs. We found One Lucky Duck in the Chelsea Market, a raw and Vegan juice bar and snack cafe.
One Lucky Duck is a tiny counter service joint offering a menu of raw, Vegan and organic items like juices, shakes, salads and desserts. There is also a small marketplace area where you can pick up some pre-packaged snacks as well as supplements like Kelp and Chia powder.
Although there is a wide selection of food such as salads, lasagna and lettuce wraps, we went there for only one thing- the Vegan juices and shakes.
I choose the Hot Pink – a mixture of beet juice, pineapple, pear and ginger. It was delicious. The ginger made it very spicy- I could just feel the healthiness kicking in. Sweet and spicy was a great and refreshing combination.
Chad went for the Calypso shake- a frothy concoction of mango, raspberry, lemonade and vanilla. It was thick and cold just like a traditional “milkshake” but without all the dairy and sugar. The shakes are made unsweetened, however you can request Stevia or agave nectar if you prefer. And, to any of the beverages you can add a variety of supplements from bee pollen, hemp protein to goji berries.
There is minimal seating in the entire market but if you are lucky enough to find a place to sit, it can be quite entertaining watching the hustle and bustle of the market. I saw lots of tourists but also a few Chefs walking around in their crisp white uniforms. I am assuming these were the Chefs with their fabulous kitchens at the Food Network Studios which are located just upstairs from the Market.
Chelsea Market is a hip collection of bakeries, restaurants, kitchen stores and even a very stocked produce market. This place is a culinary lover’s dream.
Anyway, back to One Lucky Duck…..unless you already know about this place, you may have trouble finding it or stumbling across it. It is tucked into corner of the market, behind a walkway of other walk up stands and can easily be passed right by. However, just get to the middle of the market and start heading towards West 15th Street and you will find it to the left.
Again, we only had beverages here but there is a large selection of fresh juices and shakes to please any palette. Whether you go the raw, Vegan or organic route or are just looking for something healthy, you will find something for you at One Lucky Duck. We paid $18 for one juice and one shake, a little expensive even for New York City.
I already have the Tuscan Kale and Radicchio salad, and a Blue Grape juice (grapefruit and blue-green algae) on my radar for next time. Or maybe the Pumpkin Seed and Herb Salad with an Avocolada shake (avocado, pineapple, coconut water, lime and vanilla.) We only had the juices today and other than being a little expensive, we enjoyed our healthy beverages. 4 1/2 out of 5 sprouts.
