San Jose’s Original Mexican Restaurant used to be my favorite spot for Mexican food in the Orlando area. Then, I don’t know what happened. I don’t know if they changed owners or if we just caught them on a bad day. My most recent experience there was so disappointing. I got slop. On a plate.
Pictured here is the vegetarian enchilada platter. One cheese, one bean, one spinach and one mashed potato. Well, I can’t tell what’s what. And that’s it. There isn’t even anything to help make this look appetizing.
And this is the veggie combo platter. A cheese chile relleno, a bean burrito and a mashed potato enchilada. At least this came with a side of beans. But still- nothing else to make it look appetizing. And by that I mean- not even a sprig of parsley.
One of the fun parts about going to a restaurant (besides not having to clean the dishes) is admiring the presentation of a dish. Many chefs take great pride in pleasing the eye as well as the palette. I think the kitchen staff at San Jose’s just wanted to get my plate heated in the microwave and then get it out of the kitchen. And it all tasted like that too. Like it was frozen and then microwaved.
One thing that was good was the queso dip. It was hot, creamy and spicy. Just the way I like my melted cheese. And the chips were at least warm too.
And just for comparison, here is the veggie enchilada platter from a previous visit…..
And again, this is how it was presented this last visit….
Presentation can really make or break your dish. I was so turned off I didn’t even eat the whole thing- it was so boring. Blah. Boo. I really, really, really, really hope I just caught them on a bad day. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed it may be a long long time before I return here. San Jose’s is a chain here in the local Orlando area so maybe I just had bad luck at this one location.
