The Vegan Cafe

Water at The Vegan Cafe

We love finding quaint little places to eat while traveling and especially seeking out the Vegan or Vegetarian places.  While in West Palm Beach, we found The Vegan Cafe.   Unassuming and tucked away in a strip mall just west of Cityplace in West Palm Beach,  The Vegan Cafe has only been opened for a few months.  So new, in fact, they don’t even have the signage in place yet.

Carrots and Ginger Moe's Fermented

Moe's Fermented

We walked in just before the lunch hour on a Monday afternoon.  Though they do serve breakfast, we chose to have lunch.  After we ordered our food and because we were there in between the breakfast and lunch rush, we were able to talk with the owner and his wife (who doubled as our server.)  Moe, the owner, and his wife had turned Vegan a few years ago and he began to ferment vegetables.  The fermenting business was so successful he was looking for a bigger space to work in and he found this place and eventually decided to turn it into a small Vegan cafe.  No worries, he still produces and sells the fermented veggies and we saw several people come in and purchase the jars of them.

Fermented Tea The Vegan Cafe

As we waited for the food, our server offered us a taste of their fermented tea, something I have never had before.  It was incredible.  It looked like champagne, it tasted like champagne- all without the alcohol.  We were told it is quite popular mixed with orange juice- just like a Mimosa.

Wheatgrass The Vegan Cafe

Wheatgrass juice

I had ordered a shot of wheatgrass juice (1.5 oz. $2.00)- something else I have never tried before.  I was first told that they had not yet gotten their shipment of wheatgrass yet.  However, about ten minutes later the man with the wheatgrass came barreling through the door with 2 pods of the grass and within 5 minutes I had a shot of green stuff sitting in front of me.  That is how fresh it was.  It smelled like grass, it tasted like grass and it was good!

Juice Bar The Vegan Cafe

There is also a full juice bar which we didn’t try but we did see a few people come in and order juices to go.

Veggie Burger The Vegan Cafe

For food we ordered the Veggie Burger ($10.99) which was quite large and served with a side salad.  The patties are made fresh in house and served on a bun topped with lettuce, tomato and onion.  There was a sauce on the burger which was slightly spicy and tangy and shame on me- I never asked what the sauce actually was.  However, the burger was pretty tasty.

Pad Thai The Vegan Cafe

We also tried the Pad Thai  ($9.99) which is served with a choice of Mung Bean noodles, raw zucchini noodles or on a bed of greens and sprouts.  I chose the zucchini noodles.  I liked the spicy peanut sauce and I really liked the fresh veggies- carrots, cucumbers and cabbage sliced into long strips.

Raw Zucchini Noodles The Vegan Cafe

My only complaint would be that the strips were really long which made it quite messy to cut smaller, let alone fit into your mouth due to the sauce.  However, it was flavorful, spicy and satisfying.

Kale Salad The Vegan Cafe

We also ordered the Kale Salad ($4.99)- shredded kale, raisins, pumpkin seeds and shredded carrots.  We only ordered the small- but it was big enough to be a full sized entree.  We had a lot of food and the good thing about Vegan food is it fills you up without weighing you down.

The Vegan Cafe West Palm Beach

As we were finishing up our meal the cafe was starting to fill up.  That’s a great sign for a new place.  We will be back most definitely the next time we are in or passing through West Palm Beach.  The outside of The Vegan Cafe looks like a dive bar but the inside is fresh and cozy (if that even makes sense.)  Most deserving of five out of five sprouts.
